We are existing in two realities simultaneously. Our external, physical reality as we move through space and time and our internal, private reality. No matter how appropriate Pop Art is to American society, the native art movement that most inspires contemporary American artists – American painters most of all – is Abstract Expressionism. The expansiveness and contrasting personal intimacy of this much-heralded, much-displayed phenomenon has taken a permanent place in our culture – our cultural heritage, to be sure – and to this day, decades after its “triumph,” Abstract Expressionism has provided us a language to speak and a phrasebook upon which we can determine myriad variations.
